The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) supports inclusive and protective policies and practices that promote the rights and autonomy of those with disabilities.* NSGC strives for universal design and advocates for all collaborators to prioritize inherently accessible systems, communications, and technologies as well as the continuous evaluation and adaptation of practices to support the disabled population. NSGC denounces ableism and believes that all individuals, including but not limited to our patients, colleagues, and students, have the right to self-determination and equal access to healthcare, employment, education, community engagement, and reproductive and parenting freedom.
NSGC recognizes that the history of medical genetics has promoted and contributed to eugenics, which leads to harm and discrimination of disabled people. Furthermore, NSGC recognizes that elements of eugenics persist. NSGC reinforces the importance of providing balanced, up-to-date medical and social information about disability. NSGC believes it is crucial to center the voices of the varied lived experiences of people with disabilities in all settings, especially in the context of patient practice, policy making, and reproductive justice.
*NSGC recognizes that individuals with disabilities have different language preferences, and believes that efforts should be made to match preferences when discussing and writing about disability. The language in this document is reflective of this, and alternates between person-first and identity-first language.
