We are happy to share that the AMA has published the new genetic counselor CPT® code! The new code, 96041, will replace 96040 in January 2025.
This is a positive development for the genetic counseling profession as “face-to-face” is no longer in the code description - instead this code can be used to bill “total time” provided by the genetic counselor on the date of the encounter.
As with any new code, there is a transition period to work through. While these changes are regular activity for the majority of healthcare providers who utilize multiple CPT® codes, it is less common for genetic counselors who typically only use one code. We understand that any change is a challenge and will require education both internally with your employer and externally with payers. NSGC will work on behalf of the membership to advocate with large national payors, but there will be many regional and local payors who contract with your institutions that will need education.
