There are also about 20 genetic tests that can assess one’s risk of suffering an aneurysm—a bulging blood vessel that can be fatal if it bursts in the brain or the aorta that feeds the heart. (The actor John Ritter died at age 54 in 2003 of a “dissected” or torn aortic aneurysm.) Anyone found to have a genetic predisposition would be advised to undergo periodic imaging tests of their blood vessels, so any abnormal bulges can be found and treated, either with surgery or medication, says Amy Sturm, a genetic counselor at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center who specializes in cardiovascular disease.
