Melissa Richter was always ahead of her times.
Certified in aluminum welding, the White Plains native was “Rosie the Riveter” two years before the cultural icon became a symbol of women’s economic power during World War II. In 1969, Richter made history by founding the nation’s first graduate degree program in genetic counseling at Sarah Lawrence College, the progressive liberal arts college in Yonkers.
