DESCRIPTION
This course is a seven hour compilation of plenary presentations given at the 2021 NSGC Annual Conference. All lectures have a DEIJ theme, covering the history and landscape of DEIJ in genetic counseling, ways to improve health equity within the genetic counseling field, and the improvement of patient care across diverse populations. This series includes the following lectures: Non-Violent Communication: Leading and Participating in Constructive Dialogue about J.E.D.I., Dr. Beverly Rollnick Memorial Lecture: The Problem with Race Based Medicine, The Devil is in the Details: Race-Based Medicine and Healthcare Disparities in Genetic Counseling, Practicing What We Preach: Acceptance and Advocacy for Genetic Counselors with Disabilities and Chronic Conditions, Beth Fine Kaplan Best Student Abstract Award: A Qualitative Study of Transgender, and Gender-diverse (TGD) Individuals’ Perspectives on Research Seeking Genetic Variants Associated with TGD Identities Gender-Inclusive Genetic Counseling: What Have We Learned and How Do We Incorporate It into Our Practice?
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Incorporate recent developments and technologies in genetics/genomics into genetic counseling best practices.
- Illustrate the use of advanced counseling techniques and application of counseling theory in the field of genetic counseling.
- Evaluate strategies for appropriate communication about sex, gender, ableism, and genomics in order to promote just care for patients across diverse populations.

The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned at this program for the purposes of genetic counselor recertification.
