DESCRIPTION
For medicine and healthcare practices, part of the role of EBP is to utilize high quality evidence to demonstrate the impact of interventions on patient care. Various stakeholders evaluate EBP and outcomes when making decisions on treatment, testing guidelines, insurance reimbursement, and public policy. At this time there is still a lack of evidence-based outcomes related to genetic counseling and genetic testing. This leads to challenges in the genetic healthcare landscape in creating coverage guidelines for patient evaluation and management, as well as support for genetic counseling services. As genetic counselors, we need to better understand EBP and how these data and outcomes guide healthcare decisions in regards to providers, payers, policy, and patients. In the future, more and more focus will be on EBP related to genetic healthcare and interventions based on genetic knowledge. Screen reader support enabled. This course is designed to highlight the concept of EBP and how it is applied in the healthcare space. Attendees will gain a better understanding of EBP and the importance of EBP in clinician practice, guideline development, payer decisions, and policy outcomes. The goal is to have EBP experts outside of the GC profession to set the stage, deliver the concept and explain using examples. Then we will wrap up with a GC EBP expert discuss the future EBP within the genetic counseling field.
