NSGC is an authorized provider of continuing education for genetic counselors. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) earned through NSGC-approved educational opportunities will be accepted by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) for purposes of Genetic Counselor recertification.
This webpage is in the process of being updated, if you have any questions related to CEUs, please reach out to ceu@nsgc.org.

Year-End Frequently Asked Questions
I read that ABGC’s Recertification Application and NSGC’s CEU Portal are now connected via the “bridge.” What does this mean? How can I confirm that certificates in my NSGC CEU Portal are automatically distributed to my ABGC Recertification Application?
- Genetic counselors have the option to opt into participating in the “bridge.” By opting in, Category 1 certificates (issued on or after January 1, 2025) in your NSGC CEU Portal will automatically be transferred to your ABGC Recertification Application. This makes the recertification process easier for you, as you do not need to manually upload Category 1 certificates from your NSGC CEU Portal to your ABGC Recertification Application for recertification.
- Please note: Even if you have opted into the “bridge,” you will still need to manually upload Category 2 certificates from your NSGC CEU Portal to your ABGC Recertification Application.
- Please note: Certificates uploaded to NSGC’s CEU Portal will only be transferred to ABGC’s Recertification Application after the “bridge” is enabled by the individual. Certificates issued before the “bridge” was enabled will not automatically transfer to your ABGC Recertification Application.
- To verify whether you are participating in the “bridge,” log into your NSGC CEU Portal and select “My Account” in the upper-right corner of the screen. If an ABGC Unique Identifier matching your ABGC ID appears under your Practitioner details, your bridge should be active. Please note: If certificates in your NSGC CEU Portal are not visible in your ABGC Recertification Application by Thursday, December 25, retrieve the certificate from your NSGC CEU Portal and upload it manually to your ABGC Recertification Application.
I completed my evaluation for the NSGC 44th Annual Conference but I do not see my certificate in my NSGC CEU Portal. How can I access my certificate for the NSGC 44th Annual Conference?
- Anyone who completed their Annual Conference evaluation by the December 14 deadline should see their certificate in the NSGC CEU Portal. If you completed your Annual Conference evaluation after the deadline but before December 23, your certificate should populate in your NSGC CEU Portal by EOD December 24. Individuals who complete their evaluation after December 23 will not receive a certificate in 2025. Please note that the evaluation platform for the NSGC 44th Annual Conference will permanently close on January 31, 2026. After this date, it will no longer be possible to claim CEUs from the NSGC 44th Annual Conference.
I completed courses in the NSGC Online Education Center, but I do not see the certificates in my NSGC CEU Portal. How can I access these certificates?
- Certificates for courses completed by the December 15 deadline with both a passing quiz grade and a completed evaluation will be uploaded to the NSGC CEU Portal no later than Friday, December 19. If coursework was completed after December 15, or if your NSGC–ABGC bridge is not active, retrieve your certificate directly from the NSGC Online Education Center and submit it to your ABGC Recertification Application as proof of completion.
I completed an NSGC-approved Category 1 Activity organized by another organization (not NSGC), but the certificate is not visible in my NSGC CEU Portal. What should I do?
- All Category 1 CEU organizers were informed that the deadline to submit attendance information and payment was December 15. This information is required for issuance of certificates. The NSGC Executive Office will check daily for late submissions until the office closes on Wednesday, December 24, and will continue adding certificates during this period.
- All attendees should receive their certificates by December 24. If you have not received your certificate by this date and need it for recertification, email ceu@nsgc.org and info@abgc.net with the name and date of the event, as well as registration confirmation. The NSGC Executive Office and/or ABGC Headquarters will respond to your email when their offices reopen on January 2, 2026.
I submitted a Category 2 activity application for credit. Will it be approved before the end of the year?
- All Category 2 applications received by December 15 will be reviewed before the end of the year. If your application is approved, the certificate will be uploaded to the NSGC CEU Portal. Please remember: all Category 2 certificates must be manually uploaded to your ABGC Recertification Application, even if you have an active ABGC-NSGC bridge.
- However, if your application requires revisions, approval may not occur until 2026. If you need Category 2 approval for a recertification period ending December 31, 2025, contact ceu@nsgc.org immediately.
I submitted the missing certificate request form, but I have not received a response yet.
- NSGC's CEU Team is working through all missing certificate requests. NSGC's CEU Team will respond to your inquiry after a comprehensive review of activity and attendance materials has been completed.
I am an activity organizer and have questions about the attendance records that I submitted and/or when certificates will be issued.
- Please reach out to ceu@nsgc.org with your questions. NSGC's CEU Team will respond as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the Difference Between Category 1 and Category 2 CEUs?
Category 1 CEUs
- Are applied for by activity organizers before the activity occurs.
- Require pre-approval from NSGC and cannot be approved retroactively.
- Are NOT reported by individual attendees directly to NSGC. Activity organizers submit claims and earner reports on behalf of attendees.
- Category 1 CEUs should make up at least 60% of a genetic counselor's recertification credits.
The Category 1 timeline outlines important dates and deadlines for organizers planning a Category 1 CEU event (conference, course, webinar, etc.), as well as dates and information for genetic counselors who have attended an approved Category 1 event.
Genetic counselors who have attended a Category 1 event can expect to see their CEU certificate within 150 days after the event has ended. (i.e. If the conference you attended ended on September 15, you can expect to have your CEU certificate by February 12).
Category 2 CEUs
- Category 2 CEUs can be granted for educational programs with content that is relevant to a genetic counselor’s continuing education despite not being primarily designed with the continuing education of a genetic counselor in mind.
- Category 2 CEUs are only available for educational programs that have been approved to offer continuing education credits or units by a reputable non-genetic counseling CE provider (e.g. CME, CNE)
- Are applied for on an individual basis by genetic counselors.
- NSGC asks genetic counselors to submit Category 2 applications AFTER attending an event that was not Category 1 approved. Quarterly applications required for series activities.
The Category 2 timeline outlines important dates and deadlines for genetic counselors who attend an educational event (conference, course, webinar, etc.) that has not received Category 1 CEU approval by NSGC and would like to submit for Category 2 CEUs.
Genetic counselors must submit their Category 2 application and all supporting materials within 90 days of the event end date and can expect to see their CEU approval within 10 weeks from the date of submisson (i.e. If the event you attended ended on September 15, you have until December 14 to submit your Category 2 application. NSGC then has up to 10 weeks to review this application, so you can expect to have your CEU certificate by February 22).
